A widespread belief concerning ghosts is that they were composed of a misty, airy, or subtle material. Anthropologists speculate that this may also stem from early beliefs that ghosts were the person within the person, most noticeable in ancient cultures as a person's breath, which upon exhaling in colder climates appears visibly as a white mist. In the Bible, God is depicted as animating Adam with a breath.![]() Gradient Ghosts, v.III, 2009 Installation view, Devotion Gallery, Brooklyn, New York 3 LED lightboxes with Duratrans prints, paint on 4' x 10' wood panels sizes variable ![]() Gradient Ghosts, v.III, installation in-progress, finishing up the painting, 2009 Our project space was located at El Museo Cultural, an old warehouse that locals say is haunted and has a history of unexplained sightings. During the first night of installation we had the entire building to ourselves and were working well past midnight. All of a sudden we heard metal clanking and breaking glass, then we saw shadows of two figures in a hallway across from us. We thought the place was being robbed and called the police. The police showed up quickly and did a complete walk-thru, they found broken glass but nothing conclusive. ![]() Gradient Ghosts, v.III, installation view of the painting before LED's are installed, 2009 ![]() Gradient Ghosts, v.III, unwrapping the LED lightboxes, detail view, 2009 ![]() Gradient Ghosts, v.III, Duratrans detail view, 2009 ![]() Gradient Ghosts, v.III, exterior view from the street, 2009 |
